BENNETT’S MOVING SERVICES

COMPLAINT: I cannot recommend this moving firm for many reasons.. They underestimated by ~50% what needed to be moved, compared with another more recognized firm. In both instances I went from room to room with the company representative and a notebook in hand that listed each room’s contents to be moved so nothing would be overlooked. Bennett’s damaged several pieces in the move and destroyed one piece. They were going to leave several expensive items behind because they could not be fit in the largest truck they had.(My realtor intervened for me.) They gouged the newly finished wood floor dragging items in the new house. They only partially reassembled furniture. In preparation for the move they dropped and smashed a cherished crystal dining room chandelier (see picture below) I had for over 50 years as they started to remove it from the ceiling.. The “technician” explained it was secured by a single wire (it had been up 33 years and installed by a contractor) and showed me the picture, supposedly documenting this. I asked why he didn’t take this into account when removing the chandelier. No reason given! His surly response was “Duly noted” as he stalked off, cutting off further communication. Shattered Chandelier on floor! But they did conscientiously and meticulously pick up all the scattered, broken pieces and placed them and the destroyed framework in a pre-built shipping container the technician had built and loaded it on the truck, without telling me it would be shipped. How thoughtful! Of course I still had to pay for that container and shipping! There was nothing salvageable of the fixture! Once at my new home I had to dispose of it. That’s when I learned how rickety the shipping container was. Not cheap, just rickety. But the technician had built it and wanted his money. They fractured the glass of two of my large aviation pictures. More expense. Yes, Bennett’s Movers are cheaper, but in this instance cheaper is an inferior move. My final charge was 25% more than what Mr. Bennett had assured me would be maximum cost. That figure would NOT be exceeded!! Really. The reality: I was given no choice when the final bill was computed but to pay then and there at end of move. This was a very significant move for me, an elderly, disabled man. I had lived in my home for 33 years. The one consoling event was when the movers first arrived and the van driver told me not to worry, they would take care of my “things” as if they were their own.
