Peter and his employees were terrific, they worked very hard, I had some very heavy pieces and he made every attempt to move every piece with extreme care. They treated my items as if they were their own, I will refer them to anyone that needs a professional mover and would use them again myself.
I selected Nation Capital Moving largely based on the positive reviews on this site (and several other sites). Generally, we have had good success selecting quality companies based on open and honest reviews that other consumers post. Therefore, I was deeply distressed when Nation Capital Moving wanted to buy my silence knowing that we were very unhappy with their service. They offered me materially higher compensation (for issues described below) to sign a nondisclosure agreement prohibiting me from posting any comments or discussing in any way. It made me wonder, how many other people had negative experiences but decided to take the money and not post their complaints – I would surmise that there are a fair number of people that fit this category so I am not sure Nation Capital’s ratings are a fair indication of their actual performance. So how did Nation Capital Moving actually perform? There pricing was largely consistent with several other carriers quoting an Ohio to Florida move based on a set inventory list. As stated above based on the very strong reviews, we opted to go with Nation Capital. The trouble started several weeks before our move when I recognized that we had significantly more boxes than originally quoted. I contacted Justin at Nation Capital to let him know we needed meaningfully more space. Justin told me they could accommodate the extra boxes and have ample space for any additional items. He provided an updated quote reflecting the new inventory estimate. Several weeks later when the truck showed up, the lead mover was unaware that we increased our inventory, and the truck did not have sufficient room for even our original inventory list. I had heard horror stories when shipments are transported in two different trucks but since we needed to vacate our house (which sold), we didn’t have a choice but to accept split shipments. Unfortunately, we were another horror story – the first truck came on-time. The second truck arrived 22 days later. Obviously, this can be a major issue if you are missing items which are actually needed to live in a new house. The compensation from Nation Capital per their contract is $30 per day after the last delivery date (they provide a 10 day delivery window). All of that may be standard in the industry – I don’t know because we have never run into this before – but to receive $30 per day beginning on the 11th day after delivery seems crazy, especially if you can’t live in your house. And yes, there were broken items (among other issues) from either the move or from sitting in storage. Even without the split shipments and delays, I would characterize their performance as “fine” – worthy of maybe 3 stars. Given our actual experience I can’t see recommending them and would caution others to discount their reviews/ratings for other customers who opted to take the cash and not write a review.
