That’s why in this article, we take a look at different items you shouldn’t put in moving trucks. Keep reading to know how to prepare for your move day – and what to have waiting for your movers.

Movers will not transport flammable things

The first things you will want to evade moving to your new home completely are flammable items. These can be extremely dangerous to transport inside a moving truck, and thus movers will refuse to do it. All it takes is one spark, or for the moving van to get hot – which sometimes can happen. Then, these materials can combust, and your things will get damaged without any chance for repair. The worst of all, you might not even realize there is a problem when driving the truck – since you won’t notice until it is too late.

Sometimes, all it takes is one spark to cause horrible damages.

What are flammable items? Well, this includes items like lighter fluids, any alcohol and nail polish remover, etc. To check whether an item is flammable, you will have to look at its label. Usually, these items will have a little flame drawing or a sign that tells you to keep the item away from open flame.

Similarly, you should not put anything combustible inside your moving truck either. There might be some obvious things here – like fireworks, for example. However, you might not even realize that some of the items you have are highly combustible too. For example, aerosol cans are strictly forbidden in moving trucks. Similarly, you should not bring deodorants, cooking sprays – and even tile cleaners. Again, check the labels on these items when you are emptying your cupboard. And do not forget to dispose of them in the right, safe way.

Important documents and medication are some of the items you shouldn’t put in moving trucks

Sometimes, there are items movers won’t move not because they are dangerous for the other items on the truck, but because you should keep them with you on a moving day. And even if you are driving the moving truck yourself, you should still evade putting these in. Things can easily get jumbled in the moving van, and then it can be hard to find them quickly. This can end up being pretty bad – especially if you need these items. We are, of course, talking about personal documents and medications.

First, your documents. Whenever you are moving, you should keep all the paperwork with you at all times. Gather up your contracts, bills, and receipts, medical and dental records, your kids’ school records – any piece of paper you have. Put them in a binder so you can keep them together. Then, keep this binder close to you. Usually, the glove compartment will work just fine – but try to keep them somewhere safe even during your trip.

medicine is one of the items you shouldn't put in moving trucks

The moving day can get hectic – so make sure to keep your meds close to you throughout the day.

The same applies to any prescriptions you are taking on a regular basis. You do not want to lose these in the back of a moving truck, and thus is one of the items you shouldn’t put in moving trucks at all. The same goes for any emergency meds – but you probably already know this if you are taking any. Sometimes, a moving truck can get stuck in traffic. Therefore, your items might arrive later than expected – along with your meds. You do not want to be put into this situation – so avoid it at all costs.

Some other items you should be moving by yourself

These two “groups” are perhaps the biggest things you should not have in the moving truck. However, they are not the only ones. There are many other, “smaller” things that warrant the same level of care and attention when relocating. For example – and we already started talking about this – you should be careful with temperature-sensitive items. The moving truck can get pretty hot, and this heat usually stays inside the truck. Therefore, it can destroy any items which cannot withstand the heat.

This includes things like instruments, art supplies, some electronics – and much more. If you need to move these items, you will have to figure out how to do it yourself. Conversely, you can also talk to the moving company and see if they have any other transportation options. Some companies will have a temperature-controlled truck, though these can be fairly rare to see – and will cost you more. However, it is still an option worth exploring.

food cans

Movers might move food cans – but make sure to talk to them about it first.

Another group of things you should try and evade putting inside a moving truck is perishable items. Again, the temperature can damage these quite badly. Food can get spoiled if they are not canned, and other things can go bad as well.

Finally, it might seem weird to some, but plants and pets are definitely on the list of items you shouldn’t put in moving trucks. Pets might seem obvious, but a lot of people are unsure about moving plants. Things can shuffle around in the truck and boxes can fall and damage the plant – so movers will usually refuse to transport them. This is why you will have to move plans yourself.
