Most people make mistakes. Especially when dealing with something they lack experience in. And unless you’re a professional mover, you probably don’t know much about moving. That alone is enough to make moving pretty difficult. Of course, with a bit of help from Verified Movers in finding quality movers, a move can be a breeze. That said, not everyone wants to hire movers. Some people prefer doing everything on their own. Sadly, though, doing things you’re inexperienced in on your own comes with various downsides. One such downside is making numerous mistakes. DIY moving is no different. But if you’re set on going through with it, here are some of the most common DIY moving mistakes you should try to avoid making.

1. One of the biggest DIY-moving mistakes is thinking that DIY-ing the move will make things cheaper

Unless you want to run out of money when moving from Colorado to Illinois before you can say Jack Robinson, you really have to plan your budget. Most people make the mistake of thinking that everything is more affordable when DIYing a move they pretty much give up on budgeting and start spending willy nilly thinking expenses won’t add up. A box here, a rental there, and before you know it you’ve spent your whole moving budget. Be careful, this happens more often than people care to admit.

2. Thinking safety is overrated is another common mistake

You’re doing things all by yourself so what could go wrong, am I right? Well, truth be told, a lot can go wrong. That’s why you should be safety-conscious as if you were having someone else do things for you. Remember, you’re not a professional. And even if you were, things happen. Getting insurance and all that jazz is a must!

3. Not taking planning and scheduling seriously is a problem

When doing things on their own people tend to slack and procrastinate. There’s no set time for completing certain tasks and there’s no one expecting you to do something so they can do their jobs. Because of that, people tend to get overly lazy and things tend to get overly drawn out. This can lead to many issues down the line. Just don’t be one of those people. Take planning and scheduling seriously when DIYing your move!

4. Professional movers’ advice should be taken seriously

One of the most common DIY moving mistakes is getting a bit too overconfident. And this is a problem when you know nothing about the task you’re about to undertake. People think moving is easy so they don’t go to professionals for advice and they don’t do their research. We’d advise you to heed the advice of professionals. They know much better than you.

5. Don’t think you’re a natural-born packer

Packing is by far regarded as the most annoying and tedious moving task. But it also seems super easy, does it not? You just throw things in boxes and that’s that. Sadly, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Most people don’t realise how wrong they were until it’s too late. They’ve already made a mess of things, they’re falling behind, and things are not looking good. So if you don’t want to make this common DIY moving mistake, we’d suggest you take packing seriously.

6. Time flies by so much quicker than you might expect

As in life, so in DIY moving, people underestimate how quickly time flies. And when moving, this can be detrimental. If you wish to keep your sanity intact, you should start early and stay consistent. It’s so easy to make the mistake of slacking when DIY moving. If you want to avoid this happening to you, you should always plan, schedule, and stay on track.

7. When DIY-ing your move you should be aware of the fact that not all packing materials are made equal

A box is a box, is it not? Sure, in some way it is, but when it comes to moving, that’s just not the case. Not all packing materials are made equal and you should be aware of that. Unless you want a mess of a move you should invest in quality moving supplies.

8. Not asking for help is a common DIY-move mistake

You don’t need movers, you don’t need friends or family, you don’t need anyone! And while in all other circumstances we’d say “You go girl! (or guy)”, in this particular scenario, we kinda have to call you a dummy. Moving is so hard when doing everything by yourself. But if you ask for some help from friends or family members, or even movers, you might even be able to think about things to buy after moving into a new home, some cool places to visit after the move, etc…Otherwise, you’ll just be stuck thinking about moving tasks.

9. Renting the wrong truck is a common mistake people make when DIY-moving

Yet another common mistake when DIY moving is renting a wrong-sized moving truck. This alone can be a huge issue that creates so many problems for you. So you should inform yourself of the rules and steps of renting a moving truck. If you do, you’ll be less likely to make a mistake.

10. Another DIY moving mistake is thinking the moving stops once you reach your new address

You might think that the first day in your new home will be a relaxing bliss after all that moving stress. However, we are sad to inform you that unless you hire movers who will unpack you and get rid of the mess, that’s not how things are gonna be. There’s a lot you’ll have to do after the actual move so you should prepare for that, too.

Please try not to make any of these DIY moving mistakes!

Even though there are a lot of DIY moving mistakes people can and do make when moving, it doesn’t mean you have to make them as well. Just by reading and learning about these mistakes you can ensure you don’t make them as well. That said, you can’t really be sure nothing will go wrong. You might prepare for one thing, but then something completely different happens. So even if you’re well informed, you should prepare yourself properly for the unexpected.
