Up until the beginning of the twentieth century, travel between the coasts was something more unusual. Obviously, there were people who would still embark on a journey like this. However, they were a large minority. Industrialization and development enabled us to travel long distances more affordably. Therefore, moving from NYC to LA became something that takes place more frequently today than it ever had in the past. However, the sheer fact that you need to relocate is one thing. Another thing is making sure that you are entirely ready for it. Are you certain that you know what you need to do to prepare? Is this the right move for you? There are many questions, and Verified Movers are here to give some answers. In order to help you do it the right way, we have decided to share with you the most important pieces of advice.

This was a difficult move a while ago, but now, thousands of New Yorkers are moving to LA every year.

What are the benefits of relocating from NYC to LA?

Any relocation has its pros and cons, and you don’t need us to tell you that. But, we’re here to introduce you to the benefits of this coast-to-coast relocation. Of course, we aren’t forgetting about the downsides either, but we’ll get to that a bit later. For now, let’s focus on the positives. First of all, no matter where you’re moving from, even when leaving a city as great as the Big Apple, Los Angeles is never a bad idea. This Californian gem has too much to offer, and there are very few people that instantly don’t fall in love with it. But, let’s get into more detail and show you why moving from NYC to LA is a great decision.

A chart saying:
New York City is 24% more expensive than Los Angeles
NYC has a higher unemployment rate (5.6%) than LA (4.9%)
Future job growth favors LA as well at the rate of 34.6% compared to NYC's 30.7%
LA is a paradise for remote workers and freelancers, while NYC is more suitable for office jobs
NYC is colder than LA with an average annual temperature of 53 °F vs 65 °F in LA
Los Angeles is more spacious than New York City
The City of Angeles is much more accessible to nature than NYC
The lifestyle in LA is more relaxed than in New York City, known for being one of the busiest cities worldwide

Is there anything that suggests this is not an ideal move?

Yes, there are some downsides to this move, but all things considered, they don’t seem big enough to write Los Angeles off. It’s too good of a city for something like that to happen. But, we are here to show you both sides of the coin, so here are a few negatives. Crime rates are slightly higher in LA than in NYC. By using a widely-accepted safety metric, LA was 1% worse than NYC in this category, which isn’t a big difference, but also we can’t say that it’s a negligible one. In terms of entertainment, NYC is probably the only city where you can move from to LA and have fewer entertainment opportunities. But, don’t worry, LA is still easily one of the most entertaining cities in the nation, even in the world for that matter. Truth is, in most categories, LA matches, or even surpasses NYC, so this relocation is definitely worth a shot.

New Yorkers who are leaving the Big Apple are always keen on giving LA a chance

Despite the distance of almost 2,500 miles between this city, despite it being one of the longest cross country moving trips you can take, this is a very common relocation. In fact, it is one of the most common cross country relocations in the United States. And, this isn’t only about NYC to LA. Moving from New York to California in general is such a popular choice. The fact that slightly more than 30,000 people relocated from NY to CA last year tells you about enough. And, of course, the most common route between these states is moving from NYC to LA. Around 7,000 New Yorkers opted for a move to the City of Angeles, and we see similar numbers every year.

Los Angeles is the 4th most common moving destination from New York City.

It’s interesting that a vice-versa move is not done by so many people. There were almost twice as fewer residents going in that direction than from NYC to LA. Angelenos simply aren’t as keen on Big Apple as New Yorkers are on LA. The important thing is, many people are moving in this direction so you’re far from being alone. Who knows, maybe some of your friends have decided, or they’re about to decide, to do the very same move.

Cost of living comparison

Now, we already spoke of some differences between LA and NYC, but have only mentioned the cost of living once, and the financial side of the move in general. We did this on purpose because we wanted to cover this topic separately simply due to its importance. We want to give you a whole picture of the expenses, so you can understand exactly what to expect once you complete this move. Well, as you saw earlier, NYC is 24% more expensive than LA in general, but we’re going to break this difference down into several categories.

A chart saying:
NYC's housing costs are 30% higher than LA's
The average monthly rent for a 2-bedroom apartment is $3,200 in LA compared to $4,200 in NYC
NYC imposes a higher personal income tax (10.1%) than LA (8.0%)
However, LA imposes a higher sales tax rate (9.5%) than NYC (8.9%)
The average basic utility bill in NYC is $180 a month, while in LA, it's much lower ($139)
New York City has better salaries with the average yearly wage in the Big Apple being $85,000 compared to $82,000 in Los Angeles
Transportation costs are 17% lower in Los Angeles
